MULTIPLE BASELINE DESIGN:
- weakest experimental control and showing functional relation between IV & DV (less repetition of conditions per participant).
- use with irreversible BX, Bx that cannot be unlearned.
- good for measuring generalization across subjects/settings.
- do not introduce intervention / IV if baseline is not stable.
REVERSAL (ABABAB) DESIGN:
- strongest experimental control = more repetition of removal and introduction of the IV or intervention.
- do not use on severe or dangerous BX, since this requires removal of intervention.
- experimental control is present with stable responding within each phase / the BX follows each criterion closely.
- do not introduce intervention / IV if baseline is not stable.
MULTI-ELEMENT / ALTERNATING TREATMENTS DESIGN:
- alternated across sessions daily / in a day / during the same session.
- look for "rapid alternating".
- single BX / DV with 1 or more intervention IV.
- eliminates sequencing effect.
- best to use for severe and aggressive BX. it doesn't require baseline.
- does not require withdrawal or reversal to show functional relation.
- best to use for BX that needs intervention immediately.
- used frequently for functional analysis.
- cons: confounding effects of one treatment on BX due to the other treatment.
CHANGING CRITERION DESIGN:
- look for "gradual or stepwise".
- BX must already be in the subject's repertoire.
- can be used to increase or decrease target BX.
- do not use if teaching a new skill.
- do not use for BX that needs to increase/decrease quickly.
OTHER VARIATIONS OF MULTIPLE BASELINE:
MULTIPLE PROBE:
- data are collected simultaneously throughout the BL phase for ach Bx / setting / subject.
- look for "intermittent measures / probes", "acquiring first steps of intervention", "discontinuous data collection".
DELAYED MULTIPLE BASELINE:
- subsequent BLs are added in staggered or delayed fashion.
- use when full scale MB is impractical; limited resources.
- new subjects / Bx/ settings become available and could be appropriate to add to the experimental design.
