A Journey to Self-discovery through Creative Expression

How many times have we asked ourselves, who am I? I believe that out of all the essential questions that we have in our lives, this one is the hardest to answer. Why? Is it  really that difficult to really know our true self, our own self? As we go through life, we tend to be defined by the things that we do, the things that we say, the things that we believe in, the people that surrounds us, the place we live in, as well as our origin. Are we truly this person defined by our social group, culture, occupation, and relationships? Do they define our true Being? What does it really mean to be truly yourself? I believe that there is nothing wrong if we fulfill our roles as a member of society, as an employee, as a friend, as a family, as a partner, and so forth. In finding our true purpose in life and fulfilling our heart’s truest desires, we are taken to this life-long journey — our journey to self-discovery.

This is my life’s journey, exploring paths to self-discovery. In my journey, I hope to answer all the questions I have about my being and my life. Recently, I am beginning to realize that I do not have to strain myself from finding that sole purpose that will give meaning to my life and being. As a partner, a friend, a sister, a daughter, and any other roles I have in my life, I believe that I have a purpose for each role. I can be who I should be and wanted to be at the same time. Being able to freely express myself as a partner, a friend, a sister, a daughter, as a unique being, I believe is all I need in my journey to self-discovery. How difficult would it be to really know who we really are if we can’t express ourselves?

There are plenty of ways wherein I can genuinely express myself in times when I feel stuck, stuck in life. Reuniting myself with creative expression allowed me to rediscover and realize the benefits of arts and music in my life, most especially in expressing myself. Feelings and thoughts that are inexpressible, arts and music made it possible for me to share and communicate such thoughts and feelings not just to others but also to myself. The messages of my artworks and music may not be clear to others but the way they speak to me matters a lot. They open up my mind, heart and soul to the messages of my inner self.

As I walk through the paths that will lead me to discovering my being, I am also creating the life of what is known as our ultimate end — happiness. I believe that happiness as well as contentment are very attainable. However, in our world that is embellished by materialism, it is so difficult to notice and appreciate the simple beauties in life. I have focused a lot of my attention and energy to things that define what life should be instead of listening to the messages of my inner soul. I realize how often I got lost trying to follow what the outside world dictates instead of listening to the messages of my inner self. How? I did not give myself the chance to respond to my inner needs therefore not allowing myself to actually express what is really going on inside of me. Creative expression opened up the doors between my inner self and the outside world, hence, lighting up my path to discovering my true and inner self. With creative expression, I can listen to and feel the needs of my inner self and respond to it in a way that allows me to express who I truly am. Like I have mentioned, being able to freely express myself is very important in my journey to self-discovery and creative expression has given me the means to freely and truly express myself. Creative expression is something that I would like to take with me in my journey to self-discovery, something that I would like to share to others as well as keep as part of my daily exploration of this life full of wonder and surprises.
